Lanzarote – A Top Diving Destination in Europe

125 km away from Africa an island emerges from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Dominated by volcanoes, this island has been whipped for eons by the inexhaustible trade winds and its majestic waves. Thus, after many years, the inclement weather has shaped an island that will not leave the traveler indifferent.

Welcome to Lanzarote, one of the most wonderful islands of the Canarian Archipelago.

If we had to describe Lanzarote in one word, we would choose “Contrast”. Lanzarote is an island of contrasts. Volcanoes of different colors (black, red, brown and orange) emerge from their plains like giants watching everything that happens on its slopes. The green of its palm trees, the blue of its seas, the brown of its lands, the white of its towns and the breadth of the views make each curve along the way worth to stop and spend a few minutes contemplating the incredible landscapes of Lanzarote.

Perhaps the beauty of Lanzarote out of the water is an aperitif of what awaits us if we decide to explore it underwater. Well, Lanzarote, true to its style, is a world class diving destination.

Marine life in Lanzarote

500 different types of fish, 80 different species of marine mammals and 5 species of sea reptiles await the intrepid visitor who wants to discover the reefs of Lanzarote. Amongst them, we must highlight the iconic angelshark (Angelote). In addition, 25 different species of rays of which we highlight the beautiful butterfly ray, devil ray, the bull ray or the curious mottled electric ray and when lucky, the manta ray.

Turtles, seahorses, huge groupers, big tunas, groups of big barracudas, sardines, flounders, moray eels, garden eels, octopuses, pufferfish, cuttlefish and an endless list of species share waters with some indigenous species that only exist in the Canary Archipelago such as the Canarian lobster, the “Pico Pato” moray eel or the Canarian lizard fish among others. And if we were to have all the luck in the world, we could find mola molas, hammerheads, blue sharks or even some mammals such as dolphins or sperm whales.

Lanzarote also offers dramatic and spectacular underwater landscapes that you cannot miss. Volcanic seabeds surrounded by white sands, walls that descend to abyssal depths, caverns that shrink the heart, infinite fields of soft corals and even a blue hole. And if what you like is diving in wrecks, we have a considerable number of wrecks to offer you! All this uniquely decorates the bottoms of Lanzarote to make the diving experience unforgettable.

If we have not convinced you yet that diving in Lanzarote should be on your diving bucket list, we give you 7 reasons why you should consider diving in Lanzarote:

1 – Diving in Lanzarote

As we have already been commenting, diving in Lanzarote is spectacular. Reefs full of life, big fish, sharks, rays and many more. And we do not forget the lovers of photography, nudibranchs, especially pink flabellinas, little shrimps and crabs, seahorses and anemones.

Lanzarote offers diving all year round. Perfect to escape from the thought of European winter when all the other nearby destinations are closed.

It is also perfect for all kinds of diving. Weather you prefer Recreational Diving, Cave Diving, Technical Diving or you just want some fun riding scooters or exploring incredible wrecks. Everything at your reach, and in an easy way. Check out all your possibilities here.

So yes, Lanzarote’s spectacular diving is the number 1 reason to come visit us!

2 – The Water Conditions

  • Visibility between 20 to 40m.
  • Water temperatures between 18C° in winter and 25C° in summer.
  • Perfect sea conditions like a lake in almost all its dive sites.
  • None or only mild currents.

Depths and conditions are for all experience levels. Easy water access and anything from shallow to deep. Especially divers interested in technical diving find their happiness in Lanzarote, since there are many spots nearby the cost that drop down to a depth of more than 200m.

3 – Diver’s friendly

Lanzarote is a Diver’s friendly island, where diving is supported by the government. Playa Chica for example offers a dock with easy access to its several fantastic dive sites, parking for the dive centers, showers and toilets as well as safe ascent areas. Not to forget the practical bar just by the sea, perfect for surface intervals or a deco beer!Another diver’s friendly example is the creation of the famous Museo Atlantico.

We experienced ourselves that in other parts of the Canary Islands divers are constantly being hampered by local governments, like if we divers were an inevitable pimple on the ass to bear. As divers it is important to value and support those destinations that promote and embrace diving as a positive practice. Lanzarote is a pro-divers island, you will feel it when you visit us.

4 – Endless Dives

With more than 100 different dive sites, of which 50 are classified as outstanding, you won’t be able to see everything in one trip, not even in two. High biodiversity, qualityband quantity – it cannot be better.

5 – The Weather

Lanzarote and the rest of the Canary Islands offer an extraordinary climate, which is why they are known as the “islands of eternal spring”.

The main characteristic of the climate of Lanzarote is none other than the mild temperatures, in fact its average annual temperature is 22C°. As we like to say, in summer it is fresher than in the rest of Europe and in winter it is warmer. Do you imagine celebrating Christmas in shorts or sun tanning on the beach? Lanzarote has the perfect weather all year long!

6 – The Distance

The inhabitants of Europe are used to long and expensive trips to access spectacular diving destinations.

False! Lanzarote and its incredible waters are 3-4 hours by plane from most of the capitals of Europe. The vast majority are direct flights. And the rates to fly to this beautiful island are very reasonable!

7 – The Dive Schedules

When diving in Lanzarote you will start early in the morning. What a priori might seem like a disadvantage, is perhaps what makes diving here even better. Adding that the trips and distances are usually quick and short (5 minutes), you will finish your morning activity by 12 to 1 pm. The earlier you dive, the calmer is the sea and the entire environment. Especially in the early mornings there is lots of incredible marine life around enjoying their peace.

If you are an inexhaustible diver, you will be able to dive 4 times a day and still you will have plenty of time to enjoy a relaxing afternoon/evening with your beloved ones.

If, on the contrary, what you like is having the afternoon free to visit the island, or you have family with whom to share your time, this schedule will give you a lot of free time after two incredible morning dives.

We give you an extra reason:
