Start now and become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. Share your passion and experience with other ocean lovers and bring the smile to their faces. Teach the world dive and explore the blue.

As a certified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor in active teaching status you will be entitled to teach PADI core courses from Seal Team and Discover Scuba Diving, through Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver Courses up to Rescue Diver and Divemaster, including certain PADI Specialty courses.

To become a PADI Instructor you have to participate in the Instructor Development Course (IDC) which takes approximately7-10 days and is separated into two parts:

  • Assistant Instructor (AI) course: 2-3 days
  • Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program: 5-7 days

After the successful completion of the IDC your PADI Course Director will sign you off to attend the final certification assessment, the Instructor Examination (IE).

The Instructor Examination is a 2-day evaluation program where the instructor candidates are tested on their teaching abilities and dive theory knowledge. You have to demonstrate the mastery of skills, show professionalism and the right attitude as well as the understanding of the PADI system. The IE is a standardized evaluation and conducted by a specially trained and neutral PADI Instructor Examiner. After the successful completion of the IE, the candidate is a certified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. Since the IE is hold by PADI and not by the Dive Center, there is an extra fee for attending the IE.

In case you are limited in time or would like to take it easy, you can split the IDC and do it step by step. The successful completion of the Assistant Instructor (AI) course results in the PADI Assistant Instructor Certification. Once you are ready to progress, you can then attend the OWSI program and qualify for the IE and earn the full instructor rating.

To start the PADI IDC, you have to be a Divemaster that is a certified diver since at least six months, and have 60 logged dives and 100 dives to attend the IE. You also have to proof Emergency First Response training within the past 24 months.

What will you learn?

During the IDC your PADI IDC STAFF Instructor and/or PADI Course Director will teach you how to conduct the PADI core courses. You will be trained to organize and present classes, conduct skill development sessions and how to control open water dives. Key topics are the PADI Standards and Procedures, the PADI System, learning and instruction as well as Risk Management and Diver Safety. You will better understand the Business of Diving and your role as an instructor. You will learn more about Marketing and Sales Counselling applied to diving. All in all you will be qualified to conduct PADI courses and become a confident instructor.
